Pro has a History Manager that shows the chat history and allows the user to add bookmarks for revision later on. Trillian Basic and Pro both come with Activity History, and both log the history as both plain text files and as XML files. Subcontacts will appear under the metacontact as small icons aligned in a manner of a tree. To eliminate duplicates and simplify the structure of the contact list, users of Trillian Pro can bundle multiple contacts of the same person into one entry in the contact list, using the Metacontact feature (cf. * Red and Black for Novell GroupWise Messenger * Orange and Dark Gray for Bonjour (Rendezvous) * Electric Purple for Jabber (including Google Talk) * Blue-Gray for IRCAlso there is a new one out for MySpace IM. The Trillian designers chose a color-coding scheme based on the subway maps used by the London Underground that uses different colors to differentiate between different lines. Prior versions used the corporate logos for each service, but these were removed to avoid copyright issues, although some skins still use the original icons. Trillian represents each service with a different-colored sphere. Contacts are not bound to their own IM service groups, and can be dragged and dropped freely. All contacts are gathered under the same contact list. Users can create multiple connections to the same service, and can also group connections under separate identities to prevent confusion. Trillian connects to multiple instant messaging services without the need of running multiple clients. An upcoming product called 'Trillian Astra (4.0)' has been announced and is currently in alpha testing.

There are currently two types of Trillian available, the original and free 'Trillian Basic 3' and the commercial 'Trillian Pro 3'. The of the official web site even used to have a shrine to Douglas Adams on its front page. The program was named after Trillian, a fictional character in ' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' by Douglas Adams. Initially released July 1 2000, as a freeware IRC client, the first commercial version '(Trillian Pro 1.0)' was published on September 10 2002.

The app also suffers due to the fact that there is still currently no support for Skype – this is something that has been available in the Windows version of the software for a little while, but it is promised in a future release. Everything works exactly as it should, but the way the interface is set out is not perfect. The Mac version of Trillian is good looking, but it does feel somewhat more disjointed that the Windows version. Other features you would expect from a chat client such file sharing are also be to found here, and despite the impressive range of features, Trillian boasts a small footprint and speedy performance.

Still to be added to the app is support for group chatting, as well as support for Skype – once these features have been added, there is not much that needs to be done to make Trillian an indispensible chat tool.
